Early 4.3 Thoughts

Into the Maw!

It’s only been 2 days, but I already have some preliminary thoughts on the new and last patch for the Cataclysm Expansion:

When I first logged in last night, I immediately tried to go to the new Darkmoon Faire but quickly realized that it doesn’t start for a couple of weeks. I then saw a tank in my guild chat looking for DPS for the new heroics. I quickly joined, and realized that I hadn’t done a heroic in MONTHS. I hate those trolls, btw.

We ended up getting 4/5 guildies and pugged a healer and moved on to the first dungeon. We quickly cleaned up the first dungeon in 30 minutes and continued, as a group, to get the next 2. We only wiped several times overall, but it was surprisingly easy. Only one member from the group had done these fights before, and his strats were useful, but reports were coming in from all over the twitterverse that PUGs that had no idea what to do were downing bosses in a few attempts.

It’s crazy to think that we were clearing Firelands with ease for 378 gear, which all of my raid members have. Now we get a huge jump to 397 gear in the Dragon Soul raid and we one shot the first boss on our first look. Ok, granted we struggled on Yor’sahj, the second boss, but many raid teams are reporting going 3, 4, 5 or more of 8 on their first night. Big Crits went 7/8 on their first night. People are now complaining about how easy the new content is, which is hilarious to me considering the contrast with the complaints from the last patch and how “hard” it was relative to Wrath. While I agree with it from an objective point, I’m a casual raider and a parent. I’m perfectly fine with the content being “easier.” I don’t need to have needles shoved in my eyes while I drive an obstacle course to prove my manhood. This is a game. A video game. No physical talent required. Why do you need to pull out your e-peen; it’s pathetic. This is for fun, not life, not even a job. Not even a flashy car to show off. It’s a freaking video game. Easy is okay.

Looking forward to the Darkmoon Faire!

Drop it Like it’s Relevant

Aw man, none of us wear this gear!

I’ve often wondered if Blizzard would ever implement a more targeted loot system in raids and dungeons. How many times have you been in a group when holy pally gear drops…and there’s not even a paladin in the group? Similar to that, we’ve had quite a streak of “Paladin, Priest, Warlock” tier gear dropping in Firelands. Although we do have a priest and a pally (no lock) in our raid, the gear has dropped so many times, they have both their main and offspec pieces already, while the DK token (me) has not dropped even once. We are sharding quite a few pieces in Firelands, yet our group still has a few gear spots to fill.

If I were grand poo-bah of Blizzard, I would consider implementing a system that would drop random loot, but only draw from a pool of loot that is relevant to not only the class composition, but spec as well. Let’s say you have an elemental shaman in the group, but no hunter. Well, this new system would drop intellect mail, but not agility mail. Ok, ok, of course some of you would prefer to have offspec pieces drop as well, so as a compromise, I suppose I would just restrict it to class so that would drop…sheesh. At least this would stop holy pally gear from dropping because I mean, who wears intellect plate?!

Share your stories of loot irrelevance.

Recruit-a-Friend…again

Orc Warrior and BE priest...love?

So, with the expansion of Recruit a Friend to level 80, AND 4.1 patch’s ability to send heirloom items to other accounts on the same Battle.net account, I decided I’d go ahead and level my level 10 warrior bank alt and a priest to boost my level 48 hunter.

I first thought I’d do what’s easier…level dual shadow priests. The reason is that it’s easier to dual-box the same class. However, I have a level 10 bank alt warrior. He’s been with me for 5 years. I feel bad for him. So….I mailed my clothie heirlooms to my newly created second account (on my battle.net account, which is a new feature of patch 4.1) and of course, my warrior already had all the heirlooms (okay, leather chest, shoot me).

Also, even though it will probably take me a little longer to dual box a tank/healer duo, with a server transfer, I won’t have to dual box a second pair (unless I’m that psychotic). I have a level 48 hunter and 77 shammy, so when my priest hits 80, I can grant 32 levels to my hunter and 3 levels to my shammy to get them both to 80 (yeah, 5 wasted granted levels). I’ll pay $25 for that luxury.

I’ll try and update how the progress is going. I have 90 days to benefit from the triple xp, but if levels 10-25 are any indication, it will rock. I went from 10-25 on BOTH toons in just 3.5 hours. And that included a bunch of monkeying around with addons, macros, etc. I did 2 dungeon runs after level 15 and each run gave me 5 levels (3 at the end of each due to a massive xp gain).

I think I’ll take that.

Won’t You Fu$%ing Sheep?!

Won't you Fu$&ing Sheep?!

I loved “Go the Fu&% to Sleep,” as read by Samuel L. Jackson, so much that I decided to pay homage to it with my own Warcraft version.

Please enjoy!! (Don’t worry, I’ve bleeped out all the cuss words…although I do have the explicit version…hint hint)

Segment #5 on “The Instance” – Don’t Drop Your Tank!

Guess i gotta drop this dungeon...again

Audio

I had a little rant for my fifth segment of “Epic Diapers” on “The Instance.” With my limited schedule, I plan my 6 hours of raiding each week (2 nights, 3 hrs each), and opportunistically play whenever I can. Some of this time is filled with quick leveling of alts, but if I think I have an hour or so, I’ll join the dungeon queue with my main. The problem is, I often am interrupted unexpectedly when trying to squeeze in this playing time. It might be my daugther, son, or my wife that need me at that very moment, or perhaps the house caught on fire. It’s surprising how little personal time you can count on having when raising a family.

I like to tank, but with these constant interruptions, I personally feel it’s rude to drop frequently if you are a tank. The other 4 members are relying on you, and if you can’t give the community a reliable commitment, just DPS. DPS can be replaced immediately in a random PUG, but when a tank drops, it can take 5-10 minutes sometimes. Of course, it’s your right to tank if you want, even if you have to drop 4/5 randoms you run. It’s your $15 a month. I just believe proper dungeoning etiquette can go a long way.

Stay epic, my friends!

Now entering heroics…..there’s an app for that…

Are you there yet?

Despite the farming for elementium ore, I can be a little ADD, especially when I thought the prices had bottomed out. I wanted to explore the new content, despite the fact that I would be cutting into my profits. Alas, I leveled my DK main to 85 and promptly purchased the ilevel 346 shoulders and legs with my 4,000 justice points I had banked before the expansion hit. That, along with several reputation items from Hyjal and Therazane, my ilevel sat at the precipice of heroic dungeoneering at an enticing, yet frustrating ilevel average of 328 (329 is required). Frustrated at the concept of being one point short, I realized that one of my dps rings was level 318, highest for that slot. Well, what if I purchased the level 333 tanking ring from Therazane….would that up my average? So, I purchased it and magically, I witnessed that average level bump up to 329!

So, here’s a tip: if you’re still short of the 329 average item level, just purchase any reputation rewards for slots with low item levels, even if it’s not for your spec! It worked for me!

Afterwards, I visitied all of the dungeon entrances I had yet to discover, and promptly entered the queue to face 45 minute waiting times.

The problem with being a father of a 5 year old and especially an infant, I rarely, if ever, have long periods of uninterrupted time to play this game. That’s okay when I’m questing or farming; I can just hop on my flying mount and hover safely for 15 minutes while I attend to pressing family matters at 1am (mainly a crying infant). However, with these new heroics taking some time to complete, I cannot just walk away. I have tried 3 heroics thus far and have yet to complete one, as something always hits the fan after entering the queue. It’s frustrating, but to be expected. This is also the reason why I can’t tank heroics. Although it would be faster to farm rep and rewards this way, it’s unfair to the others in the dungeon. So, it will take some time to get those valor points and reputations raised with this process. That’s okay, I still need to quest out Twilight Highlands, Uldum, and Vash’jir anyway….then there’s my alts to level too!
