Rare BOA Loot for Your Epic Alts

6 Mar

Your alts are sexy, and you know it. Treat them well.

By now you probably know that there are rare creatures and containers on Pandaria that carry bind on account loot, but did you know how many of these pinatas exist there are and truly how much loot you can gather up for your army of alts? I looked it up, and there are a whopping 28 known creatures and containers, each which can carry a possible list of more than 20 BOA items.

Finding these treasures also counts towards several achievements, if you care. The BoA items are primarily weapons, trinkets and medallions. Some are item level 404, good to use at level 85, but several are ilevel 450 and useable at level 86. These high level weapons will be good to tear through mobs until your alt reaches 90, making the leveling process faster and more enjoyable. My 86 rogue is rocking a 450 and 404 dagger and is always topping the dungeon damage meters.

You will also find vanity items and vendor trash, but all of them add up to be thousands of gold, so even if you don’t always find a rare BoA, it’s cash money. I highly suggest the mods TomTom and Lost Treasures. You MUST use these with your flying 90 to zip around Pandaria, loot a bunch of rare BoAs and then bestow these wonderful gifts upon your alts and write yourself a thank you card.

Episode #49: Cooling Down Professionally

28 Feb

Success in WoW = success in life. Ok, maybe not.

Click below for the audio segment:

As Mists of Pandaria gets a little long in the tooth, it could be time to focus on small side projects that maybe slipped by the wayside as you were raiding or leveling up. Even though I’m still leveling an army of alts, I’m more focused on my professions and now I make sure that I use every cooldown every day. These cooldowns help me not only make money, but also mounts, vanity items, and high level equipment for my alts. For example, I’m creating Jard’s Peculiar Energy source every day on my Engineer, and I’m only about 10 days away from the Sky Golem mount. I also use my blacksmith to create a balanced trillium ignot so that I can eventually make and either sell or use a 553 ilevel plate armor. My scribe dutifully makes a scroll of wisdom every day, my alchemist formulates living steel for my sky golem mount and belt buckles, and my warlock tailor creates celestial cloth for ilevel 553 armor. I usually buy all my mats on the auction house as time is more valuable to me. Besides, what I make a sell exceeds the cost of the mats, so it’s a win-win.

If professions aren’t your thing, why not try some old-world raids, grab a rare mount or pet, or farm transmog gear for your metro blood elf. Or perhaps, you can simply dance your scantily clad orc on the mailbox for tips. I’M TOO SEXY FOR THIS MAILBOX…..SO SEXY IT HURTS!

Episode 48: Cooldowns are the Bane of my Game

30 Jan

I really hate cooldowns

Click below for the audio segment:

I recently leveled up my engineering to 600 and farmed for about 30 minutes until the Sky Golem pattern dropped along with the recipe needed to create a crucial material for this mount, Jard’s Peculiar Engergy Source. But, this can only be crafted once a day. So, I’ve been dutifully logging into WoW on most days to make one of these along with a living steel, but I can’t actually log in every single day! Some days I just can’t get to my gaming rig, but I always have my iPhone with me. For the love of Zeus, Blizzard, will you please make an app to craft items!! While you’re at it, it’d be great if it let us do almost anything not related to actually fighting in WoW. Be it pet battles, crafting, or the barber shop, just freaking add it. This mount takes 30 days to make, but it’ll be about 60 for me, just because I’m apparently not committed enough to this game to jump through the hoop every day like a good little citizen of Azeroth!!!!!

Ok, I’m not really that upset guys. I hope I didn’t just troll ya.

For you sports fans out there (HAHAHAHA!), Willie Dills and I will be heading up to AT&T park in San francisco on Friday to interview many of the San Francisco Giants players, including Buster Posey, Tim Lincecum, Sergio Romo and many others. Episode #47: Mission: 11 Level 90s When Warlords Drops

16 Jan

If I’m highly inebriated, I MIGHT boost a gnome warlock to 90

Click below for the audio segment:

You know those behemoth projects at home or work that seem insurmountable? The ones that seem likely to be completed after a man walks on Mars, or after Miley Cyrus stops begging for attention? Well, they say (project management professionals? I dunno) the best way to accomplish said goal is to break it down into it’s smallest parts and work on them one at a time with shorter individual time goals.

One goal that I’ve always had out on the horizon is to have all 11 classes at max level, and considering that I’ve been on a long hiatus from raiding, now might be the perfect time. Now, before you scoff at me, I already have 4 level 90s, and the other 7 are at level 81 or higher. To bend the goal a bit in my direction, I’m restating the goal as “11 level 90s when Warlords drops.” In this way, I can park a level 81 and boost him to 90 after the expansion launches, shaving 9 levels off my goal.

To break it down into its smallest parts, I need 34 levels (I currently have levels: 87, 86, 85, 85, 83, 81) to attain. Considering that every expansion has launched between September 25 (MoP) and January 16 (BC), I predict that WoD will not be released prior to late September. More likely, I think it will launch in the fall to winter time. Consider this: the time between beta and release has increased with every expansion:

  • Burning Crusade: Beta started 10/13/06 and launched 1/16/07 (3 months and 3 days)
  • Wrath of the Lich King: Beta started 7/17/08 and launched 11/13/08 (3 months and 26 days)
  • Cataclysm: Beta started 6/30/10 and launched 12/7/10 (5 months and 7 days)
  • Mists of Pandaria: Beta started 3/21/12 and launched 9/25/12 (6 months and 4 days)

This is not to say that it’s a guarantee that Warlords will have an even longer gap, but it’s probably safe to say that it won’t be much shorter than MoP, so 6 months at the earliest. Even if the beta dropped this week, it’d be late July before the expansion launches. Obviously that’s not the case, as we’re probably 2-3 months from beta, meaning launch won’t happen until September or October at the earliest.

So, back to my math. If I need to gain 34 levels across 6 toons, I can set a modest goal of one level per week. At that rate, I would finish by the first week of September. However, if my leveling rate is higher than expected, or the expansion is delayed into November, then I can throw on the extra 9 levels and finish all 7 toons by early November and save my level 90 boost for perhaps, an Alliance gnome warlock?

Ick, never mind. I’ll save the boost for my daughter, I suppose.

I am tracking my progress online, and you can view it here:

Episode 46: Leveling Your “Alts”

8 Jan

My kids haven’t quite approached this level yet

Click below for the audio segment:

My daughter is now 8 years old, and although she’s been exposed a little to World of Warcraft, I’m now allowing her to dive in deep. She has a level 8 pandaren hunter, but wanted to start a blood elf mage to “mix it up.” Now, Earthen Ring is full of my characters, so I put her on another server, but as she was picking her blood elf hair color and earrings, it struck me that Blizzard now allows cross-realm mail for account-bound items! We shrieked in joy when I told her that I could give her very powerful gear that she wouldn’t need to replace until level 80 or 85! I then sent her all of the cloth heirloom items, two trinkets, and a staff. Even as a true noob, she was one-shotting trees, undead, and lion cubs near Falconwing Square. She also has a 55% boost to her leveling experience. So, if YOU have a kid’s alt or an alt of your own on another realm, don’t forget to send across those heirlooms, but sorry, you can’t send gold.

Hey, my wife and I have been hosting a parenting podcast, called Kids are Hard, for about 3 years, and after a haitus for the last few months, we’re back with a new episode and will have new ones every 2 weeks. Episode 45: Cheap-Ass Fast Leveling

8 Dec

Being cheap ain’t always stupid

Click below for the audio segment:

Epic Diapers #45 – Cheap-Ass-Fast Leveling

Blizzard has a pretty sexy sale going on right now, and if you’ve ever thought about getting alts up to 80 or 85 quickly and cheaply, or just fooling around with dual-boxing, now’s the time to give it a try. The Battle Chest is only $4.99. This gives you every expansion through Cataclysm, and you get 30 days of free game time, which is a $15 value in itself!

After laying down a measly 5 bucks, send your second account a recruit a friend invitation through the in-game menu.  I’d suggest dual boxing with the same class for simplicity, but that’s up to you. Next, group up your new level ones and start questing up to level 80 with your triple experience, and as an FYI, heirloom experience boosts stack as well. This is easily accomplished in less than 20 hours of gameplay, and if you do that within your free month of gametime, try as many pairs as possible before your 30 days expire. Then you can transfer your level 80 over to your main account if you don’t want to keep 2 accounts acitve, or you can let the account go dormant and wait for a transfer service sale, as it is a steep $25 normally. But before you do that, be sure you grant levels from your new account to low-level toons on your old account.

Now, while it’s true that the new expansion will give you one free boost to 90, it’s unclear if you’ll be able to purchase additional boosts, or if Blizzard will limit boosted level 90 transfers for players who buy multiple copies of the expansion. Until then, have fun dual boxing alts. Of course, it is the holiday season, so you could always buy this for your significant other so that now the both of you can fight over who gets to put the kids to bed on raid night!

Episode 44: Warlords of Efficiency

14 Nov

“You’re gonna make me go do WHAT?!”

Click below for the audio segment:

Many of you out there still have the post-Blizzcon Blues, and unfortunately, I am living with the regret of not going myself, but when you have a family and both spouses work, well, it just doesn’t work out sometimes.

The new expansion to WoW, “Warlords of Draenor”, was announced of course, and I’m quite excited about some of the efficiency and flexibility they are adding to the game, especially for those of us who don’t have much time.

I’m particularly excited about Garrisons, which will give you access to followers, as your garrison grows over 3 tiers. These followers will be able to go on missions to get you epic gear and materials, along with your expanded farm creating more materials.

You get a free 90, and you get a free 90, and everyone who buys the expansion gets a free 90! I’d hold off on leveling your lowest alt and wait for the expansion to boost said alt, or even a new level 1 to 90. I wish they’d add a 12th character slot, since my best boost would only be from level 81. Blizzard also hinted that they may offer additional level 90 boosts for purchase. The reason that they should do this is because some players there will just purchase additional expansions for more than one account, then transfer boosted 90s over to their main account. Might as well make it more efficient.

More bag space! Blizzard will be increasing stack sizes of many mats to 100, and putting tabards, quest items, heirlooms, toys and tabards into a collection, saving dozens of bag slots. You’ll also be able to craft from items in your bank! So, you can dump many mats in your bank and craft from them anywhere in the world.
